KUANTAN, May 2 — Pahang mufti Datuk Abdul Rahman Osman said Muslims should not oppose the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) but assist the government in implementing it.
“Islam does not forbid the implementation of tax as long as it is done in accordance with Islamic law and does not oppress the people.
“I urge Muslims not to oppose the tax system as it is also implemented in many countries,” he said at the launch of ‘Karnival Muamalat dan Cinta Rasul’ by the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah here today.
Abdul Rahman said tax collection is not new but was implemented since the time of Caliph Omar who collected tax to be distributed to the poor.
The government has been providing information about the GST to the public so that people understand the tax system to be implemented next year.
As such, anyone who has a better suggestion than the GST should submit it to the government and not hold a rally or demonstration, he added. — Bernama
