KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA supports the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) from 2015.

There was a need to spread the tax collection net, and party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek believed that it would not affect basic and essential items.

Congratulating the Prime Minister for a good Budget, he said the country’s 5% economic growth showed Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s transformation programmes had been effective.

“This is a remarkable achievement given the challenges amid a world economic downturn,” he said.

Dr Chua added that there was an urgent need for stern actions to be taken against those responsible for the grossly inflated pricing of goods as highlighted in the Auditor-General’s report every year.

This, he added, would send a strong signal on the need for accountability and put an end to such irresponsible acts.

Dr Chua also urged the Government to ensure there would be no more wastage and leakage of public money.

The MCA said the Government has to build more affordable houses in the long run.

Party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said houses with grossly inflated prices were beyond the reach of many Malaysians.

On the increase of the Real Property Gains Tax (RPGT) and doing away with the Developer Interest Bearing Scheme (DIBS), he hoped this would help to dampen property speculation.
