KINABATANGAN member of parliament Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin has proposed that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) be lowered to five per cent instead of six as announced in 2014 Budget.
Noting that a lower rate would enable the people to adjust to GST better, he said the government needed to gradually introduce the tax.
"We cannot do it at one go as the experience may be too much of a shock for some people."
Bung Mokhtar, who supported the government's move to introduce the GST to replace the sales and services tax, said he had received feedback asking for a lower tax rate.
Turning his guns at the opposition, he accused its leaders of deliberately twisting the facts about the GSTto incite hatred among the public.
Bung Mokhtar said in-depth studies had been conducted before the government decided to go ahead with the GST.
