KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri believes that the introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) is another step towards the making of a developed nation for Malaysia.

“We are moving towards a developed nation and this is how other countries work. I am glad that the government is daring enough to introduce GST into the budget this time,” said Nancy on the sideline after Prime Minister Najib Razak who is also the Finance Minister delivered 2014 Budget speech in parliament yesterday.

She expected the corporate sector and intellectuals to understand the need to introduce GST and said that proper explanation needed to be done to make the people at large understand the necessity of it.

“It is acceptable. We should accept the change. This is how other developed countries prepare their budgets and we are moving towards a developed nation,” said Nancy.

On a whole, she said the 2014 Budget is a responsible one, apart from being fulfilling promises, it also empowers the economy.

“I think this time the prime minister is very brave to bring this transformation into the budget. I think this is the first time that he is daring enough to bring GST in because it has been there for so long and yet we have never implemented it.

“But of course the implementation is only in 2015 April, but at least the people will be prepared for it,” said the Batang Satong MP who stressed that GST implementation would not affect the prices of daily necessities.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi welcome the budget as it would benefit the people of Sarawak especially those living in the rural areas.

“This will also include my constituency, Kapit as it is one of the rural areas in Sarawak. In the next three to four years, we can expect the road to Kapit to be completed as several phases have been committed to some contractors.

Nanta disclosed that the government had allocated RM400 mln for the Kapit Road as announced by the prime minister early this year.
