Police want approval from venue owner for GST protest rally

Posted on April 22, 2014, Tuesday

KUALA LUMPUR: Organisers planning a demonstration on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on May 1 have to obtain the approval from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to use its venue before seeking a police permit.

Dang Wangi police chief, ACP Zainuddin Ahmad said the organisers only gave notice on the assembly to police without the approval of the Kuala Lumpur mayor.

“The organisers have given notice to the authorities to hold a demonstration at Dataran Merdeka but we have to reject the application.

“They failed to fulfil the condition of Section 9 (1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which provides that the organiser submits the notice and approval of the location owner before carrying out a procession or gathering,” he said when contacted by Bernama yesterday.

Zainuddin said if the demonstration organisers had obtained confirmation from the venue owner, police would be prepared to control the assembly to prevent tension and chaos.

It was learnt that the demonstration would also be held at several other areas such as KLCC and around the federal capital.

The application was made by the organisers’ representatives including Batu member of parliament Tian Chua, PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu and Kuala Krai MP Dr Mohd Hatta Md Ramli at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.
