KUALA LUMPUR: Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek yesterday said that a large majority of the people had been able to accept the concept of goods and services tax (GST).

He said based on observation results from the briefings and explanation sessions conducted by the ministry, most people now had a better understanding of the GST.

“These sessions will continue to be conducted,” he told reporters after launching Koperasi Setia Kuala Lumpur Berhad here yesterday.

When tabling the 2014 Budget in Dewan Rakyat last October, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that the GST would be implemented starting April 1, 2015.

The GST, which has been pegged at six per cent, would replace the existing sales and services tax (SST) of 16 per cent. — Bernama
