MARAN: The Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) and local leaders have been asked to go down on the ground to give briefings to the people at the grassroots level on the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to be implemented by the government next year.

Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Ismail Abd Mutalib said the JKKK, which was always close to the community and grassroots, must provide the briefings so that the people could not easily be misled by the opposition.

"The people should be briefed so that they understand what the GST is actually and would not be fooled by the opposition who deliberately create public hatred against the government," he told reporters when attending an alumni gathering of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Maran, here.

He said that the GST did not burden the people and had been affirmed by economists and implemented in 165 countries.

"The GST is much cheaper compared to current taxes and not all goods would be taxed and it certainly is not burdensome," he said. – Bernama
