PUTRAJAYA: Police have urged organisers of a May Day rally to protest the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to reconsider their plans to converge at Dataran Merdeka.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police had made some suggestions to the organisers, who are planning to gather at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) before marching to the historic city square.

He said the Dataran Merdeka would be closed to the public to facilitate ongoing upgrading works.

"We have started an engagement with the organisers and we hope they will give full co-operation to our suggestions.

"We are awaiting their feedback," Khalid said when asked about the rally after the opening ceremony of the third International Association of Police Academies (Interpa) Conference, here, Monday.

The May 1 rally is believed to be organised by non-governmental organisation Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) but certain Pakatan Rakyat leaders are expected to join the protest.

On Sunday, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had not received any notice for a gathering at Dataran Merdeka and advised the public to stay away from the planned rally.
