DAP wants GST discussed at assembly

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP wants the implications and impacts of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) that is to be implemented nationwide in April 2015 on consumers in the state to be deliberated in the State Legislative Assembly.

DAP Likas assemblyman Junz Wong filed a motion to this effect with the State Assembly Speaker yesterday, in conjunction with the opening of the first sitting of the House for this year by Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin

Junz said there was an urgent need to discuss the implication of the GST, which was approved in the Dewan Rakyat on April 7, on the people of Sabah.

“Given that Sabah has the highest poverty rate at 8.1 per cent compared to Malaysia’s 1.7 per cent in 2012, it shows that the people of Sabah are still the poorest in Malaysia.

“Therefore, the effects of the GST should be examined in detail for the people of Sabah, especially the poor and those who are in the interior,” he added.
