Wee: People feel ‘maltreated’ by govt

The outgoing MCA youth chief says that the people are livid over the various subsidy cuts, which came after the government handed out a little assistance to them.

KUALA LUMPUR: The slew of price hikes affecting various sectors have caused the people to feel “maltreated” and it goes against the government’s slogan of ‘People first’, said the outgoing MCA youth chief Wee Ka Siong today.

In his opening speech at the 49th MCA Youth annual general assembly , Wee criticised the government for cutting back on various subsidies, which caused prices of goods to skyrocket.

“I fully support the government’s slogan ‘People First, Performance Now’. This should be reflected in the policy making.

“The people feel maltreated of late following the petrol price hike, reduction in sugar subsidy, electricity hike, and introduction of GST. The little assistance they received from government was followed by unfriendly policies,” said the Ayer Hitam MP.

The former deputy minister said although subsidy rationalisation is necessary, it should never be done in a rush.

Wee also urged the government to revise the soon to be introduced Goods and Services Tax (GST) from the 6% announced to 4%.

“When the GST bill was first tabled in the Parliament a few years ago, the proposed rate was 4%. So how did it suddenly become 6%? I urge the government to publish detailed list of items which would be taxed for GST, and widen the scope of non-taxable items,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wee said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission needs to be improved to better combat corruption.

“MCA Youth fully supports the idea of making MACC more powerful and independent. At the same time, we call on the government to use the auditor-general’s report as a key performance indicator for all ministries and government departments.

“Marks should be deducted from their KPI If they are found guilty of being involved in irregularities,” said Wee.
