Parliament passes Budget 2014 worth RM46.5bil

KUALA LUMPUR: The Budget 2014, worth RM46.5bil, was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday after majority of the MPs in the august House voted in support of it.

The Supply Bill 2014 was passed after a voice vote was taken among the MPs, whereby the voice supporting the bill was louder than the dissenting one.

The last ministry to wrap up points raised during the Budget debate was the Home Ministry, represented by deputy minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

A total of 24 ministries, including the Prime Minister's Department, took part in the debate, which saw fiery exchanges and discussion among the MPs across a span of over a month.

On Oct 25, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tabled the Budget 2014 which highlights included the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), abolition of sugar subsidy, 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) and higher property taxes.

The hotly debated GST would be introduced from April 1, 2015 at a rate of 6%.
