GEORGE TOWN: The people have been urged to give the government a fair chance to explain and clarify the issues revolving around the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in a bid to improve the national taxation system.

State Development Officer of the Implementation and Coordination Unit, Prime Minister’s Department, Syed Shaari Syed Abdullah, said the people should give the chance to the government to provide a clearer picture on the issues and not to blindly believe the allegations made by certain quarters.

“In any other countries, the GST is deemed as the relatively fair system. Maybe we are not so used to it, so many allegations are made.

“The government is mulling the implementation of the GST. That is why they are taking some time before finally implementing it. We must be fair to the government, give it a chance to improve the taxation system,” he told reporters after opening the GST Briefing Session here yesterday.

Also present was Penang Information Department director Ishak Abdullah.

The session, which was organised jointly by Penang Federal Development Office and Penang Information Department, was attended by some 300 participants from government agencies, community leaders and 1Malaysia Community.

Ishak said the GST Briefing Session would be held continuously from time to time, with focus given to civil servants, who were deemed unofficial spokesmen for the government.

He said the sessions for the people at the grass root level would be held in a smaller scale through the non-governmental organisation, 1Malaysia Community. — Bernama
