Govt holds GST information sessions for public

NOVEMBER 12, 2013

SHAH ALAM, Nov 12 — The government has begun holding information sessions on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for the public through programmes and advertisements on television and newspapers, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar.

He said the government through the Finance Ministry (MoF) would also be starting information sessions to ensure the people understand the GST and its impact on them.

“The MoF with the GST team have started their information programme. So far, the reception from analysts, economists and the business community has been good.

“The GST is something that is expected as it has been long proposed and when it is time to implement it, it is our task to ensure the people understand the measure,” he told reporters after opening the Career Attack programme organised by Universiti Teknologi Mara(UiTM), here, today.

Abdul Wahid said the GST rate at 6 per cent was reasonable and the lowest among Asean countries.

He was reported to have said in a television programme that the government had made careful planning before implementing the GST in April 2015 to ensure it would not burden the people, especially the low-income group.

He said the government had been alerting the people on the GST implementation since 2006 and would use the 17 months from now to clarify the matter to all parties, including companies, to be prepared for it.

Commenting on the Career Attack organised by UiTM, Abdul Wahid said it was a good platform for both employers and potential employees to meet.

More than 70 companies are participating in the three-day programme which is offering 3,000 job vacancies.— Bernama
