YAN (Oct 23, 2013): The Barisan Nasional (BN) will use the Sungai Limau by-election campaigning period to counter attacks by Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
Deputy Prime Minister and national BN deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said they have received information that PR will use several issues to erode BN's support.
He said these issues were related to the Budget 2014, cost of living, goods and services tax (GST) and the price of paddy.
He said the BN machinery are ready to counter any arguments made by their political opponents.
"We will explain these issues in detail so that voters can make an informed decision," the BN by-election director said at a press conference today after candidates on both sides filed their nomination papers.
The 93% Malay majority seat fell vacant following the death of Tan Sri Azizan Abd Razak last month.
The present contest will see a straight fight between BN's Dr Ahmad Soihami Lazim and PAS' Mohd Azam Abd Samat, a former university lecturer and a religious teacher respectively.
Muhyiddin also urged the electorate here to give BN the mandate following 23 years of representation by PAS in the 36 seat legislative assembly.
He said the development process can be streamlined if BN won.
"Both Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir are committed to developing the area," he said.
Muhyiddin added there was currently no manifesto for the area as the one used for the 13th General Elections was still applicable.
"If there is one, then it will be based on the feedback drawn from the people here," he said.
